Tell Premier Stelmach Coal Kills
As the world grapples with climate change, the Alberta government is poised to grant approval to a new coal-fired power plant without even holding a public hearing.
Please take a moment and send a letter to Premier Ed Stelmach and the Alberta Utilities Commission to let them know you oppose Maxim Power Corporation’s plan to build a 500-megawatt plant near Grande Cache, Alberta.
This one mega-coal plant would generate three million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year (the equivalent of adding 590,000 vehicles to the road over its 45-year lifespan) and discharge mercury and pollutants responsible for smog and acid rain.
Even the oil giant EnCana said it’s bad idea.

ACTION ALERT: Demand a fair and democratic lawmaking process! Send our Governor General a letter
In a surprise move, Conservative senators voted down the Climate Change Accountability Act (Bill C-311) – Canada's only hope for meaningful climate change legislation.
Apparently they don't believe the majority of Canadians want action on climate change. They act like only a handful of 'crazies' and a few Members of Parliament are concerned.
Write to our Governor General David Johnston now! Let him know that we DO care and that our legislation should reflect majority opinion! http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5654/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=4786
How Bill C-311 was handled highlights our need for a functioning democracy. Bill C-311 was developed over five years and would have required that federal climate change policy and emissions targets be based on credible science. The bill previously won the support of the majority of members of Parliament and was championed in a petition signed by more than 150,000 Canadians. Still, unelected senators put an end to this legislation. Does that seem democratic?
Contact our Governor General and let him know that this violation of the democratic process is unacceptable! http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5654/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=4786
We must keep demanding action on climate change!
ACTION ALERT – Sierra Club Prairie Calls for No Approval of Total’s Joslyn North Mine Proposal
From Total’s own admission the new open pit mine will:
* Result in one and a half million tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution each year, equivalent to putting over 270,000 cars on the road.
* Destroy seven thousand hectares of land, equivalent to the 13,000 football fields, with no realistic hope of reclamation of these areas to the same natural state they were in before.
* Result in the production of 12.5 billion litres of toxic tailings waste each year, and over the project life amounting to a volume large enough to fill over 100 sports stadiums, without any proven plan to keep these toxic materials from entering the region’s lands and waters.
* Result in the production of 2,740 tonnes of pollution each year that causes acid rain.
* Remove and pollute up to 22 billion litres of fresh water from the Athabasca River each year.
Sierra Club Prairie asserts that many of their members are citizens of Alberta and Canada who need to speak the truth of the dangers of TOTAL’s mine being approved in an already devastated region. The governments and ERCB must show accountability and objectivity in their examination of the evidence presented at the Joint Review Panel on TOTAL’s Joslyn mine proposal, and firmly deny the approval as not in the public interest!

Pass the Climate Change Accountability Act, Bill C-311
Please join Sierra Club Canada in calling for the swift passage of Bill C-311, entitled An Act to ensure Canada assumes its responsibilities in preventing dangerous climate change (the “Climate Change Accountability Act”).
Sierra Club Canada is urging all Canadians to email and/or call Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff >>>
C-311 Background:
- This bill would set national greenhouse gas emission targets for Canada that align with scientific assessments of the emission reductions needed to have a chance of avoiding dangerous climate change. The bill would also require the federal government to take the necessary steps to ensure the targets are met.
- The Climate Change Accountability Act would set national emission targets that represent Canada’s fair share of the global effort to prevent dangerous climate change. Thus, a decision by
Canada’s Parliament to adopt these targets would send a strong signal to the world that Canada intends to do its part in tackling global warming and protecting the most vulnerable people from its devastating consequences.
