CETA: Social and environmental standards at stake in EU-Canada trade agreement

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today welcomed negotiation of an EU trade agreement with Canada. But they warned the Commission against opening the EU market to GMOs or giving up key demands such as legally-binding social and environmental standards. S&D Euro MP Vital Moreira, author of a parliamentary resolution on the issue, said: "Increasing opportunities in terms of market access is essential, but the Commission must be equally ambitious when it comes to sustainable development by supporting initiatives to help tackle climate change, promote legally binding human rights and social and environmental standards, as well as corporate social responsibility."

CETA: MEPs favour EU-Canada trade deal, but worry about seals, tar sand oil and asbestos

Whilst welcoming progress in negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the European Parliament nonetheless raised some potential concerns; one was the environmental impact of extracting oil from tar sands, due to its high CO2 emissions and its local impact on biodiversity. Another was serious harm to the health of workers mining asbestos, the processing and use of which is already banned in the EU.... Read more »
Minister Flaherty: Stop Funding The Chrysotile Institute
Dear Minister Flaherty:
We request that, in the budget you are presently preparing, your government stop funding to the Institute. The institute is registered as a lobby group for the asbestos industry and promotes the use of asbestos.
